Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Blue Lake, 1938; watercolor on paper, 18 x 26 inches; Bernadine K. Sherman Bequest, Fitchburg Art Museum, Fitchburg, MA.
Impression of morning – green air, bright sunlight, copious wren & yellowbird –
Noon to school – booming white clouds in a blue sky brilliant sunshine, deep bristling grass; balls of white dandelion down, black cool shadows under yellow green trees;
Great calm at sundown –
Evening walking down Boulevard to Lake with Kaiser – We were out of tune and the walk was unprofitable as far as each other were concerned –
I would like to become as much a part of the mysterious lake as I am of the hills & woods.
Charles E. Burchfield, May 6, 1915
